First Ever Nonstop Flight Launching From The U.S. To This Isolated Island

Located in between the scenic countries of Norway and Iceland lies an isolated nation, the Faroe Islands.
Tourists are hard to come by in this self-governed Denmark territory. Slowly but surely, more hotels are beginning to open, including a familiar brand – Hilton.
More lower-end hotels have sprung up in the capital city of Tórshavn as well. The Faroes are home to 18 picturesque isles waiting to welcome tourists with endless, breathtaking beauty.
The problem is the Faroes have been hard to reach and nowhere close to being at the top of travelers’ radar.
Unless you’re a hardcore globetrotter, you probably weren’t aware of this undiscovered gem nestled in the frigid cold North Atlantic.
But the good news for those who love a sense of adventure on the wild side is this remote island will soon be much more accessible to North America.
Atlantic Airways: The Flagship Carrier Of The Faroe Islands
An island with only a handful of traffic lights and more sheep than its population might seem like they may not have an airline, or even an airport, for that matter.
But that’s not the case. The Faroe Islands do, in fact, have an airport, and it is home to their flagship carrier, Atlantic Airways.

The airline has a small fleet of modern aircraft, but they don’t get to fly many places just yet.
Currently, Atlantic Airways fly direct to just 4 destinations:
- Billund, Denmark (BLL)
- Copenhagen Denmark (CPH)
- Reykjavik, Iceland (KEF)
- Oslo, Norway (OSL)
That’s just one destination shy of the number of traffic lights in the Faroes! There are other European airlines that serve Vágar Airport (FAE) too.
Soon, a historic new route will allow travelers to discover the awe-inspiring culture, wildlife and scenery of this relatively untouched island.
“We are very excited about this new historic route between the Faroe Islands to the US. Interest for this new route is very high on both sides of the Atlantic.” – Jóhanna á Bergi, CEO of Atlantic Airways
The First Ever Nonstop Route From The U.S To The Faroe Islands
There are countless flights coming in and out of New York City, but this new flight option might be the most exciting this year.
For the first time ever, a direct flight will be offered to the Faroe Islands from the Big Apple.
Atlantic Airways will offer seasonal flights on a weekly basis from August 22, 2023 to October 4, 2023.
Flights will take off to the Faroes each Wednesday, with a return flight to New York on Tuesday on an Airbus A320neo. Each flight is an estimated 6 hour duration.
Tickets will be available for purchase on the official website for Atlantic Airways beginning May 15, 2023.
If this first-of-its-kind route is as popular as those involved believe it will be, it could become permanent.
Those familiar with flying from NYC have probably been to one of their more common airports – JFK, LaGuardia or Newark.
Jet setters looking for a trip of a lifetime will not go to any of them, however. They will have to head north of the City to the smaller New York Stewart International Airport (SWF), owned by the Port Authority.
“Offering nonstop service to the Faroe Islands is a historic first not just for New York Stewart, but for the nation.” – Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton
Mr. Cotton went on to say, “In recent years, the Port Authority has steadily invested in New York Stewart’s transformation to an attractive, modern destination with a brand-new customs hall and unique, competitive choices for both domestic and international travelers. We look forward to our partnership with Atlantic Airways.”
Travelers have multiple options to reach Stewart, but many opt for the convenient shuttle that takes them approximately 70 miles to the airport.
SWF currently offers the following nonstop flights:
- Reykjavik (KEF) via PLAY Airlines
- Orlando (MCO) via Frontier Airlines
- Orlando-Sanford (SFB), St. Pete-Clearwater (PIE) and Punta Gorda (PGD) via Allegiant
