Southwest Airlines is one of the favorite low-cost airlines amongst American travelers, known for its friendly and efficient services and affordable fares. Perhaps the biggest draw is that there are no hidden fees.

While the airline doesn’t typically have fares as low as $17 like some other budget airlines, Southwest doesn’t tack on extra fees for seat selection, luggage, or even flight changes.  Southwest keeps its fares transparent and includes two checked bags with every ticket.  So when you see a roundtrip flight to Hawaii for $238, you know that that is all you are going to pay.

Where To Find The Deals

These fares are available directly on the official Southwest website and are not a special fare or sale, but you may need to move fast to take advantage of this price.  These low prices are for return flights during the months of April and May, and they are not guaranteed to last.

Southwest currently has five routes flying to Hawaii.  The best fares are for flights departing from Oakland (OAK), San Francisco (SFO), and Seattle (SEA).  You can use the Route Map to find where Southwest flies to from your home city or use it to see which nearby airports have routes to Hawaii.  After selecting your departing city and destination, use the Low Fare Calendar to help find the cheapest flight dates for each month.

Round trip to Kauai (LIH)

  • From Los Angeles (LAX) – $298
  • From Dallas (DAL) – $380

These were the best rates found, but there are plenty more in the $400s from other major cities across the United States.  Considering it’s a roundtrip flight, including baggage, those are still very reasonable fares for a dream destination like Hawaii.

It’s important to know that these are also the lowest fare type offered – Southwest’s “Wanna Get Away” fare.  This is their base fare and includes two checked bags, no change or cancellation fees, and is non-refundable (although you will be given flight credit if you choose to cancel).

Southwest also offers three other fare types – Wanna Get Away +, Anytime, and Business Select.  Each has additional benefits, which range from refundable tickets to priority boarding to complimentary drinks.

What To Do When You Arrive

Now that you’re saving tons of money on your flight, you’ll have a little extra to spend on your accommodation, shopping, or excursions during your vacation.  Hawaii offers world-class beachfront resorts with excellent restaurants, spas, and other luxurious amenities.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can take off into the jungle for a Jeep tour, volcano hike, or discover hidden waterfalls.  And don’t forget the national parks – Hawaii’s national parks are home to active volcanoes, coral reefs, temples, and other historical and cultural sites.

Hawaii’s beaches are some of the most colorful in the world.  You can find black, pink, and even green sand beaches in addition to its pristine white sand beaches.  Of course, these are a perfect backdrop for any snorkeling, diving, and surfing you want to do.

You can also get out on the sea for a whale-watching tour or sail on a catamaran, then return to shore for a festive luau.  Enjoy the unique cuisine while watching traditional dances and fire performances.  Hawaii is truly an amazing mix of luxury, nature, and culture.
