Layovers may not be the best part of your trip, but they can be the worst! However, it doesn’t always have to be that way.

With just a tad more research in booking your trip, choosing where you make a pit stop can make a world of difference.

It doesn’t matter if it’s a domestic flight or a trip across the ocean; layovers can range from existential dread to having so much fun you almost miss your next flight!

No airport wants to be a bore, but some are definitely better than others. Many airports all over the world have poured a ton of money into making improvements to increase customer satisfaction.

According to the folks at Simple Flying, these are the top 5 best airports in the world for layovers this year:

5) Atlanta, Georgia – Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL)

ATL is the second business airport on the planet serving as a major hub for Delta. In fact, there are over 180 gates altogether.

Due to the high amount of people passing through, this airport is an excellent choice to enjoy a layover with some southern hospitality.

Like many major airports, it can be nerve-wracking finding your way to your gate. Some airports provide an above-ground tram from terminal to terminal.

ATL does things a little differently. A train will take passengers through underground pathways connecting many of its terminals.

Each terminal is home to different restaurants and food courts, as well as at least 200 shops. If you’re too tired to shop, then you can book a MinuteSuite for a nap.

4) Hong KongHong Kong International Airport (HKG)

Hong Kong is a very futuristic city, and its airport reflects its reputation. This place definitely isn’t your average airport!

Sure, you can hang out at Starbucks like any ol’ Average Joe if you want, but why do that when you can go shopping and try on clothes virtually via the magic mirrors?

If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, this immaculate airport is also home to its own iMax theater and iSports simulator to spend time before your next flight.

If you happen to have a full day, the airport’s subway provides direct transport to Hong Kong’s Disneyland under 30 minutes away.

3) Munich, GermanyMunich International Airport (MUC)

Munich is a magnificent city that doesn’t seem to get enough love when compared to other popular European destinations.

It’s a great place to visit all year, but many come for its delightful Christmas markets to kick off the holiday season.

Fortunately, for those simply passing through, you won’t have to leave the airport to do so. The facilities have their own Christmas market, ice rink, carousel, and vendors selling hot wine and delicious chocolate goodies.

But if it’s not the holiday season just yet, you can spend your time playing miniature golf or enjoying a flick at the movie theater on-site.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Munich if it didn’t have its own beer garden and brewery too. If the booze makes you sleepy, you can book a NapCab.

2) Amsterdam, NetherlandsAmsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS)

Amsterdam is a worthy destination in its own right, but due to its central location in Europe, passengers often don’t leave the airport.

There have been many changes over the course of a century; that is how long AMS has been around.

Visitors will find a wide variety of places to eat, but more so, a lot of ways to stay busy. Of course, you can sit around scrolling TikTok like at many airports, but here in Amsterdam, you can peruse through an art museum with paintings from world-renowned artists, such as Van Gogh.

For a more relaxing feel, AMS has an indoor park where you can wind down and enjoy the sounds of nature or go for a bike ride with one-of-a-kind bikes that charge your phone while you go for a spin.

1) Dubai, UAEDubai International Airport (DXB)

Anyone who has been to Dubai should not be surprised they have the best airport in the world for layovers.

The UAE goes above and beyond for travelers. As the main draw of their country, Dubai’s airport is the first impression of this stunning city, and it does not disappoint.

The shopping options are endless, with name-brand stores such as Tiffany, Chanel, and Hugo Boss. You won’t want to leave the duty-free shops either, even if it’s just to “window shop”.

Dubai caters to long layovers with useful amenities such as a 24-hour gym with a pool, outdoor gardens for a breath of fresh air, and cozy, soundproof sleeping pods to try your best to defeat jet lag.

@melanincurator This is my first time having a layover this long where I’m alone , so to pass time I had to do some exploring 😭and if this is the airport I can’t imagine how the shops are outside. #traveltiktok #internationalstudent #foryou #dubai🇦🇪 ♬ Sticky – Drake
